October 2009

Next meeting - Monday, October 5th, 7:30 P.M., UT School of Music, Room M3.113 (mezzanine level 3M)

Our first order of business will be a general discussion of the recent South Central Regional Seminar, which was held in Houston last month.  Eight of our chapter members were in attendance; we'd like to talk over the experience and share a bit of what we learned. We are also happy to report that three of our members were appointed to the board of the SCRC:  Steve Walthall was appointed Vice-President, Ricki Klos was appointed Secretary/Treasurer, and Bernard Mollberg was appointed Seminar Manager. Next year's seminar will be in the Central Texas area, and as you can see, our chapter will have a lot of input in its planning.  In order to assist the process, please take a minute and respond to the questionnaire posted on the region's website ( www.ptg.org/scrc ). This will help us to take everyone's needs and concerns into consideration. Thank you in advance!  And congratulations to Christopher Prewitt, who passed his tuning exam at the seminar in Houston.

After our discussion of SCRC, we'll be talking about Dampp-Chasers.  Some of our members have expressed an interest in increasing their income in this time of economic downturn.  Pursuant to that, Steve will share information that he recently received from Dampp-Chaser. Their humidity control system really can prolong the life of a piano, and they've recently published information to help technicians with sales, service, advertising and networking.

Finally, we are grieved to report the death of one of our members. Bob Bingham has passed away. For those of you who didn't know him, Bob used to keep a piano shop in the Wimberley area, and retired a few years ago, selling his business to Joe Dunn. He succumbed to cancer about two weeks ago. Before he died, he gave many of his tools to Joe to bring to the chapter to give away.  Bob serviced and reconditioned many pianos, helped many people, and was a good friend.  God rest his soul.

Upcoming meetings:

November 2nd - Jeff Farris and Steve Walthall will give a talk on grand dampers, sharing what they'll have recently learned at the Steinway factory. They're looking forward to this. Hope you'll plan to attend.

December - Some sort of holiday get-together in lieu of a meeting. More on that later.

See you Monday night.
