Austin Chapter PTG Newsletter April 2008
April Meeting:
Next Meeting: Saturday, April 5th, 10:00 am hosted by Bernard Mollberg at his shop in Blanco County
Jim Watson (a young piano enthusiast) has been giving an old Brambach grand a complete make-over, including adding beams
to the case, making a new bass & treble bridge root & cap, new soundboard. Some of the work he has done in my shop, and his piano is here. He could show and tell about the project and some of what he
wants to do with it. Jim might spend 20 minutes or so showing the amazing work he has done for his piano.
In addition, Bernard Mollberg will present a technical program on re-stringing. He will demonstrate the method he
currently uses, where he drives pins with a pneumatic pin driver, uses the Sciortino Insta-coiler to make the coils. He also measures, pre-cuts, bends and oils the treble wire for each section.
Participants will be able to try driving some pins with the pin driver, and making coils with the insta-coiler and hand coil winder. Bring your hearing protection. A brief overview of bridge and plate preparation will set the stage for actually putting new pins and wire on the piano. Discussions on the efficiency of this potentially miserable job will compare techniques, sequences of work, etc.
A map and driving directions are on www.mollbergpiano.com .
Please RSVP if you think you can come, and would like to stay after the program for lunch. E-mail Bernard at bernard@mollbergpiano.com or call 830 833-2210
We certainly appreciate Bernard's hospitality in hosting our chapter meeting this month and hope that many of you will
be able to attend. If you haven't seen Bernard's shop yet, that is worth the trip by itself.
May meeting:
Monday, May 5th at 7:30 P.M. UT School of Music, Room M3.112 (Mezzanine level 3M)
Bill Cory will present his program on tuning stability, which is the same class he will be presenting at the national
convention this June in California. There will be no Chapter meeting in June, due to the PTG National Convention in Anaheim, CA. For more information about the upcoming convention, go to http://ptg.org/conv/2008/ .

More about Emily Kaitz and Friends: "Emily Kaitz, a humorous singer-songwriter who is well known in Central
Texas even though she defected to Northwest Arkansas ten years ago, will be performing with co-conspirator and Austin singer-songwriter Bruce Jones, along with their band featuring Jeanne Kyser on fiddle and
Melinda Brooks on mandolin (the two of whom are known as "The Monotones"), and noted Arkansas attorney/fly fisherman Drew Pierce on the banjo.
This will give the band a decidedly bluegrass-leaning sound. Emily and Bruce trade off on songs and instruments, both performing on guitar & bass They recently released a joint CD, "Monotoneland." Both songwriters have other CDs of their own. The music ranges from the hilarious to the poignant and is almost all original. "See this link for more of her music! http://cdbaby.com/group/kaitz
